Vallimalai MounaGuruSwamy was stricken with an attack of five different kinds of pox (like chicken pox & small pox) as a result of which he lost the sight of his both eyes. Guruji was deeply moved but in his inimitable jovial manner teased him. He said that if his Guru stood up to his full height, his matted hair touched the ground, it was so long and thick and his beard was also long and bushy. He wondered why, inspite of all this God was testing him by afflicting him with pox and loss of precious eye sight and why God did not show mercy on him, this reflected upon his veracity and he jokingly conjectured that Sri MounaGuru was not a true sanyasi. He must have done something very wrong to have merited this punishment and it was a pity that he Guruji had seen fit to associate with him. He wondered that even Sri Venkateswara, Lord of Tirupathi, had allowed this bond to grow between them. Guruji’s remark seemed to enhance the sufferings and sorrows of Sri Mouna Guru at the time of his blindness. But Mouna Guru was really not upset at these words, contrarily, he called Guruji to come near him and embrace him tightly. He kissed him lovingly and affectionately at the back of his neck, at the nape where Vaishnavites usually place a caste mark or namam.

Afterwards he wrote the following words on a picece of paper and showed to him.

“I may have committed some mistake, knowingly or unknowingly, without any cognizance and this affliction may be the punishment that has been given to me to atone for my sins. When I was in the British Regiment during the British rule, it was the custom to give appropriate punishment to those who committed mistakes. It was a part of my duty. Some were put in prison for life and some were hanged. It may be that during my tenure, I may have given the wrong sentence and punished an innocent man. That man’s family may have cursed me to become blind and this blindness may have been caused as a result of that past curse. I have to undergo this suffering due to my past karma and I have to bear it.”

Guruji read this and asked him what he was to do next. He was instructed to go to Kumaradhara and bring his Guru, Sri ParamaGuru Chittaranjan Chateerjee to see him. Guruji obeyed him at once and went Kumaradhara. He met the ParamaGuru and apprised him of the situation and asked him to see Mouna Guru Swamy.

Sri ParamaGuru said “It is not necessary for me to go with you. I shall instruct you upon the art of restoring his eye sight from here itself. This is an excellent opportunity for you to learn all the ways and means to apply this technique and cure people of their ailments and afflictions. It is a rare chance for you to realize your potential and your ability to use your skills to help people out of their difficulties. Make use of this opportunity and act accordingly!” All this was explained in Sri Paramaguru’s inimitable way to impress upon him his duty.

Guruji replied “What you are saying does not make any sense to me I do not have any practice in curing people. So how do you ask me to do this? Do you want my Guru to languish till his death, without eyesight? Are you a true Guru? Should you not have come with me as soon as you heard about the situation? But, instead of that, you are giving me all sorts of instructions to do this and that, I do not think I am proficient enough to carry out your instructions. Do you believe that my Guru will regain his sight? Suppose I fail in my efforts? I do not trust myself. What you are saying is not applicable to me, I cannot accept this. What you say seems far from the truth.”

Sri Parama Guru laughed on hearing these words of Guruji. He said, “ Please be patient. I can very well understand the deep affection you have for your Guru. You are not able to endure the plight of your Guru. You are not able to endure the plight of your Guru. I also endorse your feelings. This affliction and disability inflicted upon your master gives you a good opportunity to prove the efficacy of the healing power and art of healing that you will learn from me. It is a testing time for you and you can use your knowledge to the best of your ability. Instead of making a big issue of it, you have to make light of it. Now sit down and learn all the arts of healing this ailment.” So saying, Sri Parama Guru taught him certain mantars and ways and means to restore the lost eyesight of Sri Mouna Guru.

Guruji very eagerly learnt the art of restoring his Guru’s eyesight from Sri Parama Guru, after which he returned to the Ashram and met Sri Mouna Guru and spoke thus. “I met Sri Parama Guru and asked him to come with the immediately. But he refused and instead he initiated me into the mantra of healing your eyesight and taught me certain ways to cure you. He compelled me to learn all the art of healing. I shall do my best and try to cure you. Let it succeed by God’s grace and Guru’s blessings. If I fail, I have to bear it. I am anguished at your plight but if this is your fate and destiny then you have to bear with it.” Even then Guruji spoke with bitterness and sorrow. He felt frustrated.

On hearing this, Sri Mouna Guru told Guruji he should implicitly obey the instruction’s of Sri Parama Guru and proceed according to his teaching’s he should follow all that was taught and do exactly what was learnt. Only then there would be good results or otherwise it would be a failure. He should not give room to misgiving’s or wrong actions. This astonished Guruji and caused him great wonder.

Guruji was greatly inspired and with great enthusiasm and fervour, he swung into action. He commenced the process of healing, making good use of all the method’s and technique’s taught to him by Sri Parama Guru. Guruji sat down taking the Garuda asanam position. Sri Mouna Guru took up the position of Sirasasanam resting on his two thumbs, (upside down), on his head with feet up. Guruji then started the yagna, chanting the mantras loudly. At that time a black cobra snake came and coiled up under Sri Mouna Guru’s head and raised it’s head and started swaying side to side. It then struck Mouna Guru’s face. In this way repeated for seven days. On the seventh day, which was Chitra Pournami, Sri Mouna Guru regained his eyesight. He joyfully told Guruji that he was able to see the full moon that night.

Guruji told him that it was not the moon that he was seeing but the sun, it was done just to test him and see.

But Sri Mouna Guru insisted that it was Chitra Pournami, in the name of his Gurunathar Sri Parama Guru. He told Guruji to learn the mantras and the art of healing perfectly on this blessed dayand make use of it to the best of his ability. All this he wrote and showed him. It so happened that the day Guruji told us about this also happened to be Chitra Pournami, it was all due to the grace of his great Guru.

This was God’s playful way of testing his Bhaktha’s sincere devotion, to know whether it was deep enough and true enough to undertake great sacrifices and achieve good results for the benefit of mankind, without thought of self or mercenary tactics. We had the great instance of Sri Kannappa nayanar donating his eyes to Lord Shiva and Sri Kannappar has the distinction of being the firs eye donor.

Similarly, Guruji Sundararaman has gained the distinction of being the first disciple who has restored the eyesight of his Guru Sri Mounaguruswamy by his prayers and mantras.
